Faith and Politics
How should Christians engage in today's public sphere? Rooted in Jesus' example, our political involvement must reflect humility, justice, and compassion—serving others as we seek to honour God’s Kingdom over worldly power.

In today’s increasingly complex world, the intersection of faith and politics presents a challenging but crucial question for Christians: How should we engage in the public sphere? As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to reflect His teachings in all areas of life, including our participation in political discourse. In today’s world, where diverse opinions shape society, Christians must thoughtfully consider how their faith informs their role as citizens.
Jesus' Example of Servant Leadership
One of the key principles Jesus demonstrated during His ministry was servant leadership. Jesus says, “The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). This mindset of humility and service should guide Christian political engagement. Rather than seeking power for personal gain, we are called to serve others, especially the vulnerable and marginalised.
In a political context, this means advocating for policies that protect the oppressed, uphold justice, and promote the common good. For instance, Christians can champion social justice causes, such as supporting fair housing, equitable healthcare, and policies that address poverty. As Proverbs 31:8-9 reminds us, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
Engaging with Wisdom and Compassion
The Bible offers clear guidance on how Christians should conduct themselves when interacting with others, particularly in matters of politics. “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry” (James 1:19). In today’s divisive political climate, this counsel is particularly relevant. Engaging with wisdom and compassion, rather than reacting with hostility, can help build bridges and foster constructive conversations, even when opinions differ.
Christians must also remember that our ultimate allegiance is to God’s Kingdom. While it is crucial to participate in the democratic process, including voting and advocating for just laws, we should not place our hope in political systems or leaders. Saint Paul reminds us, “Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). This eternal perspective helps us to engage in politics without becoming overly attached to worldly outcomes.
Balancing Faith and Politics
Balancing faith and political engagement requires discernment. Romans 13:1 teaches, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” While Christians are called to respect and obey government authorities, we are also called to stand firm in our convictions when political policies conflict with biblical values. Acts 5:29 highlights this tension: “We must obey God rather than human beings.”
As Christians, we should strive to be peacemakers, advocating for truth and justice while embodying Christ’s love in every interaction. Our political engagement should reflect the values of God’s Kingdom, prioritising compassion, mercy, and humility, just as Jesus did during His time on earth.
In conclusion, Christians are called to engage in the public sphere with integrity, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility. By following Jesus’ teachings and the wisdom of Scripture, we can contribute positively to political discussions, promoting justice and peace in a world that desperately needs both.
