Nigerian Court Orders Protection for Christian Convert from Islam

The decision of the court in Nigeria ordering protection for the Christian convert from Islam is a relief to Nigerian believers persecuted by their family members and community.

An 18-year-old Nigerian woman who converted from Islam to Christianity has been granted a court order protecting her from threats to her life by her family members.
The woman, identified only as Mary Olowe, faced death threats from her father and brothers after she converted from Islam to Christianity. Her mother helped her escape to safety in a Christian community before seeking legal protection through a restraining order.
A high court in Nigeria granted an order of perpetual injunction against Olowe's father and brothers. The order states that they are "restrained from threat and attempt on the life of the applicant following her decision to change from the practice of Islam to Christianity and also not to breach her fundamental rights as to the choice of her religion or thoughts."
The order is a victory for religious freedom in Nigeria, where there have been increasing reports of violence and discrimination against Christians. It is also a reminder of the importance of protecting the right to change religion, a fundamental human right.
The human rights group ADF International, representing Olowe in court, welcomed the ruling. "This is a landmark decision that affirms the right of every Nigerian to choose their religion," said ADF International's Nigeria director, Akinola Aguda. "We hope that this will send a strong message to those who would use violence to suppress religious freedom."
Olowe's case reminds us of the challenges Christians face in Nigeria. According to a 2022 report by the Pew Research Center, 70% of Christians in Nigeria say they have experienced religious discrimination. The report also found that 20% of Christians in Nigeria have been physically attacked because of their faith.
The court order in Olowe's case is a step in the right direction, but it is only one step. Much work still needs to be done to protect religious freedom in Nigeria.
