Vinod Sharma, the former Bihar spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has resigned from the party over the Manipur issue on July 27, 2003. He has also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "sleeping" and not acting against the perpetrators of the crime.
Sharma said that he wrote to BJP chief JP Nadda and PM Modi about the Manipur video incident, where two women were stripped and paraded naked by a mob. He said that he was “deeply disturbed” by the incident and that it was “unacceptable” in a civilized society.
Sharma further said that he has raised his voice against the atrocities against women and has resigned from the BJP. He said that the BJP talks about “Nari Sakhti, Beti Bachao, Hindu Rashtra, Sanatana Dharm”, but the Manipur incident shows that the party is not serious about these issues.
The mob that attacked the women was reportedly led by members of the BJP's Manipur unit. The state government has so far arrested four people in connection with the incident, but Sharma has demanded that Chief Minister Biren Singh resign.
Sharma’s resignation is a major setback for the BJP in Bihar, where the party is facing a tough challenge from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The RJD has been using the Manipur incident to attack the BJP and has accused the party of being insensitive to the plight of women.
The Manipur incident has also raised questions about the BJP's commitment to women's rights. The party has been accused of failing to act against perpetrators of violence against women, and the Manipur incident is just the latest example of this.
The violence in Manipur erupted after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3 in protesting the proposed inclusion of people belonging to the Meitei community in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).
