Mizoram State BJP leader R Vanramchhuanga resigned on July 13 as the state vice president protesting over the demolition of Christian churches in Manipur. In his resignation letter, Vanramchhuanga said that he believes the demolition was supported by the state and central authorities. He cited the fact that Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah did not blame the burning of the churches. He also pointed out that the central government has not condemned the attacks. Vanramchhuanga said that he resigned to protest against "this act of criminal injustice to Christians and the Christian religion." He said that he could no longer be a member of a party that supports such attacks.
The resignation of Vanramchhuanga is a significant development in the ongoing controversy over the demolition of Christian churches in Manipur. It is the first time that a senior BJP leader has resigned in protest against the attacks.
The demolition of Christian churches in Manipur has been condemned by religious leaders and human rights groups. They have called for an investigation into the attacks and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. The resignation of Vanramchhuanga is a reminder of the deep divisions that exist in Manipur over religious issues. It is also a sign that the controversy over the demolition of Christian churches is likely to continue for some time.
