Living the Promise

“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (John 15:7).

By Paulson Pulikottil

It is easy to envision this promise as the enchanting words of the genie from the timeless tale of "Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.” The mystical being materialises before Aladdin, exuberantly proclaiming, “Whatever you desire, my master!” This fantastical creature stands ready, eager to grant any wish to the one clutching the enchanted lamp.

However, we should not ignore the “IF” with which this verse opens; it is a conditional sentence! Jesus promised that everything we wish for will be granted to us, but there are conditions.

First, it is fundamentally rooted in mutual indwelling: Jesus invites us with the words, “if you abide in me,” emphasising the importance of consistently choosing to stay connected to him. The Greek word for “abide” conveys more than just occasional presence; it signifies a continuous, living relationship—an ongoing union where our lives belong to Him and revolve around his truth.

To truly abide is to live ever close to Jesus in our daily routines—trusting him wholeheartedly, seeking his guidance diligently, and aligning our actions with his teachings. This means carving out intentional time for prayer, immersing ourselves in Scripture, and allowing his love and truth to transform our thoughts and actions every single day fundamentally. Such dedicated fellowship with Jesus isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential for a life rooted in purpose and divine connection.

The second condition is closely related to the first; we must also let his words abide in us. The disciples who first heard these words did not have the New Testament in its current form. However, they heard him for three years. The Gospels and Epistles testify that they remembered his words to quote them in their writings, many decades after the death of Jesus. They had let the words of Jesus abide—dwell in their minds till they died.

Now we have the Bible to hear God’s voice and have no excuse for being ignorant of God’s demands on our daily, practical lives. We must allow the Word of God to guide our lives, conduct and our hope.

Reading the Bible is the most important way to allow the voice of God to have a place in our consciousness. Reading the Bible aloud (or whispering it to ourselves) is one way of letting the Word to live in us, as we become both readers and hearers of the Word regularly.

Memorising biblical verses helps believers internalise God’s word, offering guidance, encouragement, and strength. It deepens their relationship with God by embedding his promises in their hearts, making prayer, resisting temptation, and sharing faith easier. Memorised scripture also provides comfort and wisdom during challenges, as exemplified by Nehemiah, who relied on prayer and God’s word to lead boldly.

Those who walk close with the risen Saviour, and are steeped in the Word of God, can expect great things from God, as they are keen to attempt great things for him.
