Heat is not That Bad
“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you” (1 Peter 4:12).
By Paulson Pulikottil (www.paulsonp.net)
Heat is a biblical metaphor for extreme suffering. The psalmist describes his torment as being melted wax: “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast” (Psalm 22:14). Another psalmist uses this metaphor for his self-inflicted pain: “For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me strength was dried up as by the heat of summer” (Psalm 32:3).
The heat of suffering causes anguish and pain, draining strength, but it also has positive effects. Heat purifies! The goldsmith heats precious metals in a crucible until they melt to separate the impurities. It gains a new shine! Likewise, God raises the heat in our lives to purify us. Enduring the process is challenging, but the hope of purity and the new shine it would bring help to persevere.
Though it may seem paradoxical, heat also reshapes. The blacksmith heats a piece of iron until it is red-hot and beats it to a new shape. Then he dips it in water to temper it and puts it back to make it red-hot. The iron goes through the process repeatedly: heated up, beaten, and tempered in chilly water until it reaches the desired shape. Through the painful process, it becomes a piece of art.
So, James joined Peter in writing to the churches, who were suffering immense persecution, to encourage them to rejoice in their suffering. “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2—4).
If you are going through a season of intense heat—whether emotional, physical, or spiritual pain—don’t go it alone. Take a moment today to talk honestly with God about your suffering and ask him to show you what he may be refining in you. Share your journey with a trusted friend or faith community and let them pray with you. Commit to daily perseverance by meditating on James 1:2–4 and reflecting on how trials are shaping and purifying you. Choose one step, whether prayer, journaling, or reaching out for support—let your moment of heat become a catalyst for growth and new shine in your faith.
