Peace and Security in the Lord
“The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. And he thrust out the enemy before you and said, ‘Destroy’” (Deut 33:27).
By Paulson Pulikottil (www.paulsonp.net)
The Word of God assures us that the Lord provides security and sustains us always. This verse is part of Moses’ blessing upon the people of Israel just before his death. He blessed them that the people ready to enter the promised land would be secure in peace and security.
The people of God suffered a lot in the past. For over four hundred years, they were slaves in Egypt. But God delivered them according to the promise he made to their ancestors. They wandered in the waterless wilderness without food. But the Lord provided water, food, and manna from heaven throughout their journey. When their enemies tried to stop their journey, the Lord protected them. Now, they are at the point of entry to the promised land under a new leadership.
Moses assured the people uncertain about their future with two powerful metaphors: the Lord is their dwelling place, and his arms will sustain them.
They have lived in tents all these years and know well how vulnerable their tents were to the desert winds and heat. As they settle down soon in the land of promise, they will have permanent houses. They must realise that though the walls and roofs may provide security, the actual security comes from the Lord.
Moses also blessed them that the Lord would carry and support them like a bird chick in the palm of its master. They would have to win many more battles, their food may run out, and they would have to pass through arid land without food and water, but the Lord would be with them to provide security and support.
So, with confidence, they sang: “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The LORD is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me” (Psa 118:6—7).
