The Table Is Set—But Have You Asked?
“And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9).
By Paulson Pulikottil
“Ask, and it will be given” is the promise of God, but most of us do not take the initiative to ask!
Some of us think things will fall into place on their own. Many people think time will heal broken relationships and sit back idly with fingers crossed. Some people are so confident in themselves that they believe they can solve all their life's problems. Feeling self-sufficient, they do not seek God’s help in their problems. Others do not dare to ask God to intervene in their life, thinking they are unworthy of divine grace. I have come across people who are addicted to rude habits, unable to come out of it, believing that God will never forgive them. So, they do not ask God to forgive them to release them from their shame and guilt.
Another reason for not asking is doubting God’s power to act on our behalf. The ancient Israelites, who enjoyed God’s blessings, doubted God’s ability to do more than they already had. “They spoke against God, saying, ‘Can God spread a table in the wilderness? He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?’ (Psa 78:19-20).
Asking God for help is not an excuse for laziness, but rather an acknowledgement of God’s sovereignty and our creatureliness. We are dependent upon him and not sufficient in ourselves. We will never be more intelligent than our creator.
Although God could act without us pleading with Him, He would like us to be in a relationship of conversation with Him. Jesus asked the blind man on the Jericho road, “What do you want me to do for you?” (Mark 10:51). God “will not rebuke you for asking” (James 1:5, NLT); so, ask all that you have not yet asked God.
Don’t wait another day—bring your needs, struggles, and doubts to God in prayer. Embrace His promise: ask, and it will be given to you. Step forward in faith now and experience His transformative power in your life!
