Praying for Protection from Flattery

“Everyone utters lies to his neighbour; with flattering lips and a double heart, they speak. May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts….” (Psa 12:2—4). Read Psalm 12:1—8, 5:1—12.

By Paulson Pulikottil

It seems paradoxical that the psalmists who prayed for protection from lies also asked God to shield them from those who flatter them. Like the writer of this psalm, many other writers found flattery to be dangerous. “For there is no truth in their mouth; their inmost self is destruction; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue” (Psalm 5:9). The sages taught that “Whoever rebukes a man will afterward find more favour than he who flatters with his tongue” (Prov 28:23).

The Hebrew word used here has the sense of “be smooth,” “lie,” “forge,” and even “fabricate,” which means “flatter” when used in the context of speech. Flatteries are lies.

Being flattered may be an exciting experience, but the godly consider it dangerous because it is “praise that is not sincere.” Hank Ketcham, who created the cartoon character Dennis the Menace, said, “Flattery is like chewing gum. Enjoy it, but do not swallow it. " However, the Bible advises against opening that packet of chewing gum.

Flattery is perilous because it leads us to believe falsehoods and behave accordingly, sacrificing our dignity. It often conceals malicious intentions and signals the start of destructive schemes. Its subtlety means that, in most cases, only God truly knows the motives behind it. Therefore, I pray for wisdom to see the truth about ourselves without relying on others.

Reflect today on the words of the psalmist and the wisdom of Proverbs. Ask God to grant you discernment to recognise false flattery and the courage to embrace honest correction. Don’t let smooth words steal your dignity or lead you astray. Instead, pray for wisdom to see yourself clearly through God’s eyes, grounded in truth and grace.
