Modelling Calm in the Storms

“But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’” (Mark 4:38).

By Paulson Pulikottil

When the boat with Jesus and the disciples faced a severe storm, Jesus was at the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The wind hit more strongly at the stern, and the boat shook ferociously. However, Jesus was fast asleep, not disturbed by the sound of the wind, the spray of water, or the boat tossing!

The disciples shouted at Jesus and succeeded in waking him: "Do you not care that we are perishing?" If the boat sinks, they will perish, and he will also perish with them. But he was still sleeping.

When Jesus woke up to order the sea and the wind to calm down, “the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (Mark 4:39). Jesus was in control even when he was fast asleep on the stern. Jesus slept because he was perfectly calm inside as the storm raged around him.

Why did Jesus sleep in the tumult? Why did he not wake up to help his friends scoop out the water that seeped into the boat when “the boat was already filling” (Mark 4:37)?

Jesus was undoubtedly concerned about their misery; he was not unwilling to help, but he was modelling calm. He was teaching them how to be calm amid the storms in our lives.

We wonder if God is still in control of life's storms. Why is God aloof? His apparent absence is a way of teaching us to trust. His apparent absence in our struggles serves as a way to teach us that storms are times when we must learn to be calm. He can calm the storms, but also models how to be peaceful.

This week, when anxiety rises or circumstances feel stormy, pause before reacting. Instead of rushing to fix or fear, take a moment to breathe deeply and pray: “Lord, teach me to rest like You did in the storm.” Choose one situation where you feel overwhelmed, and intentionally respond with calm—not because the storm is gone, but because Jesus is in your boat. Journal how that shift in posture changes your perspective. Let His peace shape your response before His power changes your situation.
