Streams of God’s Renewing Grace
“Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negeb!” (Psa 126:4).
By Paulson Pulikottil
God never worsens but reverses every adverse situation to good. There could be seasons of dryness and decay, but the Lord brings everything back to life.
This is the prayer of people who have been through immense distress but are now out of it. It could be about the return of exiles from Babylonian exile. They returned in waves over an extended period, and their return to former glory was in small degrees. The first wave came to rebuild the destroyed temple, but it took longer than they expected. The builders of the broken walls (under the leadership of Nehemiah) had to face immense opposition from the residents, but they somehow completed their task.
Each group that returned had its own set of challenges to face. The promised peace and prosperity are still a dream. The psalmist celebrates what the Lord has done for them, but reminds them they are still waiting for more.
This prayer for fulfilling the Lord’s plan for their life is couched in agricultural language. The Negeb is a dry, arid land with scanty vegetation. There are no rivers, but seasonal channels flow through it during a few months of rain. The word translated as “streams” describes such seasonal streams. However, when the rains arrive, the arid landscape puts on lush green cover, and the channels hold water for some months of the dry season to make cultivation possible for a few more months.
Life is renewed as dryness gives way to fertility; flowers pop up in the dry ground and then turn to fruit. That is the life that the psalmist prayed the exiles would have, a life that we also must aspire to when the Lord visits us in his amazing grace. Despite our dryness, the raindrops of his grace could bring new life.
Remember: the streams may be seasonal, but God’s grace is never out of season. Let your hope be active, your prayers persistent, and your heart open to the slow miracle of renewal.
