The Lord, the Ultimate Victor
"But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head" (Psa 3:3).
By Paulson Pulikottil
The title suggests that this Psalm could be understood in the context of David’s struggle when his son Absalom turned against him, forcing him to flee from his palace with his family (2 Sam 13:23–17:29). However, down through the centuries, people who had to face opposition from their enemies, friends, family, or foes have found immense comfort in these lines.
In the first two verses, the psalmist describes the opposition from the enemies who even claim that God cannot help him express his confidence in God in the following verses (3:3—8).
In this verse, he affirms his confidence in God using three metaphors--shield, glory, and the lifter of the head.
The shield protects a person from frontal attack, but the psalmist's view of God differs from this usual use. For him, God is a shield around him, protecting him from attacks from every side—front, back, left, and right. God's protection is thorough.
God's glory is not just light; it refers to God’s overwhelming presence. God’s glory impresses the faithful but frightens and destroys the wicked. The Lord’s glory over the Pharaoh and his army led them to their ultimate annihilation (Exodus 14:4; 17—19).
The third metaphor is the outcome of what God means to the psalmist as the shield and glory. God lifts his head hanging in shame and guilt to walk confidently. His face shines at the end, and he steps on the victory stand. God silenced his enemies, who said: "There is no salvation for him in God" (verse 2).
Threats against David came from close quarters, but God returned him to his former glory and power. It was just a matter of time.
This Psalm instils confidence in all those who go through the valleys like the ones David had to walk.
Make this your prayer and promise today: When opponents surround you and doubts arise, remember that God is your shield, your glory, and the lifter of your head. Trust that His protection covers you from every side and that His overwhelming presence defends you against every attack. Let Him lift you from shame and fear to walk in confident victory. Stand firm in this truth, knowing God will silence your enemies and restore you to strength and honour just as He did for David. Claim His faithfulness now—step forward boldly, relying on His power and presence through every trial.
