The Karnataka Election Take Aways

Karnataka assembly elections 2023 has unraveled the mind of the Indian voters. There are two main takeaways from this historical turnout.

Karnataka assembly elections 2023 has unraveled the mind of the Indian voters. The ruling BJP shrank to 66 seats while the congress won 135 seats in the 224-member assembly to form government independently.
There are two main takeaways from this historical turnout.
First lesson is that people prefer peace over development. On the run to the elections, the central government grabbed the attention of the votes with promise of development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway and laid the foundation stone of various development projects worth ₹16,000 crores in Karnataka. But still the people voted BJP out.
During the five years of BJP rule, Karnataka witnessed unprecedented religious and communal unrest and violence because of cow vigilantism, the hijab controversy, and so on. The outcome of the election testifies that people irrespective of their religious faith prefer to live in peace in their neighborhoods than the thrill of racing along the expressways. The voters refused to be lured by promises of development at the cost of communal harmony.
Second important lesson is that turncoats stink so bad that people run away from them pinching their nostrils. Most of the MLAs who defected to BJP in 2019 lost the election in 2023 thus reducing their party’s chances of forming government. The voters used the ballots to educate the politicians that they elected their representatives to govern on their behalf, not to change their alliances mid-term. Voters will is supreme.
The voters in Karnataka have affirmed again that Indian voters prioritize communal peace and that they are the guardians of Indian democracy.
We are not moving toward fascism as some fear, but even if there is some truth in their claim, the move seems to be slow and difficult now.
