Guard against the New Normal
Our world is constantly changing, with new norms emerging. The Bible offers timeless wisdom to navigate these "New Normals," helping us discern truth from deception and guard our hearts against moral pitfalls.
By Eby Lukas on 8th April, 2024
The "New Normal" is often used to describe the changes in societal behaviours and practices resulting from events like the COVID-19 pandemic. The concept of the new normal extends beyond the pandemic. It can apply to other transformative events or societal shifts, such as technological advancements, economic changes, or cultural norms.
Moral relativism, deception, and a departure from God's standards
From a biblical perspective, the concept of calling evil "good" is often associated with moral relativism, deception, and a departure from God's standards of righteousness. In contemporary society, these are prevalent issues that challenge individuals and communities, which we see in today’s society.
The Bible warns against the deception of calling evil "good" and emphasises the importance of discernment, adherence to God's truth, and alignment with His standards of righteousness. It teaches that true goodness is rooted in God's character and revealed through obedience to His commandments and love for Him and others.
In the new normal era, moral relativism is often promoted as tolerance or acceptance of diverse viewpoints and lifestyles. Deception is also widespread, including misinformation, manipulation, and dishonesty. In the age of social media and digital communication, misinformation campaigns, fake news, and deceptive practices are common, leading to confusion, division, and mistrust. Deception can also manifest in personal relationships, workplaces, and religious institutions, undermining trust and integrity.
Many societies have experienced a departure from the moral and ethical principles rooted in Judeo-Christian values. Secularisation, pluralism, and individualism have contributed to a weakening of societal adherence to God's standards of righteousness. This departure is evident in various areas, such as the redefinition of marriage and family, the devaluing of human life, and the erosion of traditional moral boundaries.
The apostle Paul exhorts believers to clearly distinguish between good and evil and to align themselves with what is good according to God's standards: "Hate what is evil; cling to what is good" (Romans 12:9).
Sexual immorality, Digital age and technology
The new normal often centres around evolving societal attitudes, behaviours, and norms regarding sexuality and relationships. In the context of the "new normal," LGBTQ+ issues may focus on increasing acceptance, understanding, and inclusivity within society while respecting diverse perspectives and beliefs.
Advances in technology, particularly the widespread availability of the internet and social media, have transformed the landscape of sexual interactions and relationships. Online dating apps, hookup culture, and easy access to explicit content can influence sexual behaviour and contribute to challenges such as infidelity, addiction to pornography, and the objectification of individuals.
Guarding the heart
According to the Bible, a timeless principle remains relevant in any era, including the "new normal" era characterised by societal changes and challenges.
Discerning spirits, the Bible instructs believers to "test the spirits to see whether they are from God." (1 John 4:1). Guarding the heart involves discerning between truth and deception, recognising influences that may lead away from God's will, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit in making wise choices.
"How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word." (Psalms 119:9). This verse emphasises the importance of living according to God's Word to maintain purity and righteousness. It acknowledges the challenges individuals, particularly young people, may face in staying true to God's ways. Still, it offers the solution of adhering to His teachings as a guide for righteous living.
In the "new normal" era, characterised by rapid changes, moral challenges, and cultural shifts, the biblical principle of guarding the heart remains a steadfast anchor for believers. By grounding themselves in God's truth, seeking discernment, fostering accountability, and relying on His strength, believers can navigate the complexities of the modern world while remaining faithful to their calling as followers of Christ.
