While remote work, re-christened as work from home (WFH) in the Covid era has been around for a while but in the post-Covid era it presents the churches with opportunities and challenges as they had to adopt to online services.
On the one hand, it has provided an opportunity for churches to reach a wider audience, especially those unable to be in a church for several reasons through online platforms. Nita (not real name), a seeker from another faith could not walk to the church in her neighborhood for fear of social isolation. But she now watches the church on mobile, participates in singing, and dares to share her testimony with the other members of the church. All from the comfort of her room.
As many employers decided to go partially or fully WFH, it impacted physical attendance as numbers hit low. Many urban churches report exceptionally low attendance as their employed members choose to return to their hometowns. At the same time the rural churches have made small gains in numbers by the return of those who moved to the cities. It is not unusual to find young people employed with Google, or Infosys working from the comfort of their homes tucked away in remote rural areas actively participating in the rural congregations.
The shift of urban population to rural areas has financial implications for the churches. Some small urban congregations meeting in rented places had to close for ever as the offerings and tithes were less than the ad hoc expenses. This means gain for the rural congregations.
Life ended for those urban congregations led by bi-vocational pastors as they moved away from the city as their employers forced WFH on them.
Overall, the impact of work from home on churches in urban centers in India has been a mixed bag. While it has provided new opportunities for outreach and engagement, it has also posed challenges to the traditional ways in which churches operate. As the pandemic continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how churches continue to adapt to these changes and find new ways to serve their communities. Working from home has its advantages and challenges, but with the right approach and mindset, it can be a rewarding experience.
