Syro-Malabar Church apprehensive of same-sex marriages

Syro-Malabar Church of Kerala wrote to the President of India that legalizing same-sex marriage could set a wrong precedence to legalize pedophilia, bestiality, and so on. The statement also says that “same-sex marriage is a negation of the natural order of relationships between a man and a woman.”

This is in follow up of the Supreme Court considering a batch of petitions seeking legalization of same-sex marriages, sought the opinions of the civil society on the matter.

In its statement the church said that it appreciates the Centre’s position opposing same-sex marriage. In an affidavit the Government of India had argued that same-sex marriages are not in line with the Indian idea of family and the arguments in its favor represent the views of the urban elites and not that of the public. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had already expressed fears that they could result in incest.
