The Lodestar

“A Week Away” is about a juvenile delinquent, Will who finds faith, friendship, and love at a Christian youth camp. This musical, directed by Roman White, opens with police officers chasing a wayward orphan who stole a police car. The Family Services Department entrusts this white teen to a black foster mother and her son on the condition that he spend a week at the Christian youth camp.

In the camp, he meets the camp director’s beautiful daughter but lies about his identity. The director has packed the scenes with Amy Grant ballads, the Warrior Games, a multiday olympiad of tug of war, dodge ball, and hula-hooping, all climaxing in a talent show immersing the viewers in a typical summer youth camp experience.

New York Times described this film as “tidy, transparent, and kid-friendly.”
