The Bible presents Joshua as a model of leadership, faith, and obedience. Having grown up in Moses’s shadow, he skillfully assumed leadership of the Israelites and led them into the land of promise.

Joshua was a trusted assistant of Moses and a military leader. His early victories, especially over the Amalekites, made him a strong leader. His steadfast faith in God makes him unique. He and Caleb were the only two of the twelve spies who believed the Israelites could defeat the giants they encountered in the Promised Land of Canaan with God’s help.

After Moses’ death, he took over the rudder with an unwavering faith that God would be with him in leading the people. This faith enabled him to execute one of history’s most amazing military strategies, breaching Jericho’s walls. He had the Israelites march around the city once a day while blowing trumpets and carrying the Ark of the Covenant. The barriers finally collapsed on the seventh day, following seven complete circuits and a loud trumpet blow. This was more than just a military triumph. It demonstrated Joshua’s unwavering conviction in God’s power.

But Joshua was more than just a military chief. He played a crucial role in preserving the Israelites’ loyalty to God’s covenant with them. His leadership laid the groundwork for Israel by dividing Canaan among the twelve tribes. He also understood the necessity of spiritual devotion to the Mosaic Law. Therefore, he regularly called for the people to renew their allegiance to it.

At the end of his life, Joshua presents the Israelites with a decision, saying, “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve….” This is one of the most powerful scenes in the story of Joshua. He resolved that the Lord shall be the master of his house and his people (Joshua 24:15). Joshua led a life of selfless service and undying love for God.

His approach to leadership was founded on trust and obedience, showing how greatness may be achieved by yielding to a mighty God. In a world where many leaders buckle under pressure, Joshua exemplifies unwavering steadfastness.
