This article examines the extent to which the disciples went for Jesus, exploring their missions, trials, and the enduring legacy of their faith.

Leaving Everything Behind

When Jesus called his disciples, they immediately left their previous lives to follow him. Peter, Andrew, James, and John abandoned their fishing nets (Matthew 4:18—22), symbolising a complete break from their past. Similarly, Matthew left his lucrative tax-collecting business (Matthew 9:9). This initial act of leaving his livelihood illustrates his willingness to prioritise Jesus over economic security and personal comfort.

Enduring Hardships and Persecution

The disciples faced considerable hardships throughout their ministry. Jesus warned them about the trials ahead, stating, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you” (John 15:18). Despite this, the disciples persevered. Paul, who was not among the original twelve but became a pivotal figure, experienced beatings, imprisonment, and shipwrecks (2 Corinthians 11:23—28). Similarly, Peter and John were arrested and flogged for preaching about Jesus (Acts 5:40—41). These examples underscore the physical and emotional toll of their mission.

Martyrdom and Sacrifice

Most of the disciples faced martyrdom as a testament to their ultimate faith. James, the brother of John, was executed by Herod Agrippa (Acts 12:1—2). Peter was crucified in Rome, reportedly upside down at his request, feeling unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus. Thomas, according to tradition, was speared in India, where he had gone to spread the Gospel. These deaths highlight the extent of their commitment, as they chose to face brutal executions rather than renounce their faith.

Spreading the Gospel Globally

The disciples’ dedication extended beyond their immediate surroundings. After Jesus’ resurrection, he commanded them to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). They took this directive seriously, spreading Christianity far and wide. Thomas is believed to have travelled to India, establishing one of the world’s oldest Christian communities. Peter ministered in Rome, while Paul undertook extensive missionary journeys across the Roman Empire, from Jerusalem to Spain. Their travels laid the foundation for the global spread of Christianity, demonstrating their commitment to Jesus’ mission.
