Four Ways of Impacting Others

“What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you” (Phil 4:9).

We can create a lasting impression, even with a brief encounter.
Saint Paul’s visit to Philippi might have lasted only a few days (Acts 16). During that brief period, he established a small congregation. He remained in contact with them through a letter and visits from his envoys, Timothy and Epaphroditus (2:19—30). Although his contact was brief, he had a significant impact, encouraging them to imitate his faith. “Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us” (Phil 3:17).
This verse highlights four important aspects of inspiring others to follow us in faith.
First, teach them. During his brief stay, he taught them everything they needed to grow in faith. He was so confident that he could say that they had “learned.” The second is to give or impart. Imparting is not only dispensing knowledge but also being a life worth emulating. The third is to proclaim or declare boldly the truth of God. We often miss opportunities in our daily lives where we could have declared who God is and what He wants from all of us. When friends complain about their illness, I often fail to mention Jesus, the healer, but advise them on the best medical professional they could turn to. The fourth is by leaving visual memories of our godly lives. I still cherish memories of a godly person who visited me in the hospital with fruits and sat by my bed for hours, cheering me up and praying for me. Memories of his gracious gestures had impacted me so much that I wanted to be him.
Let us ensure we mingle with others so that the world around us senses the aroma of Christ from us.
