The Lord Will Go Before You: Finding Courage When Leadership Falls on You

Moses spoke these words of assurance to strengthen the heart of Joshua, the man chosen to succeed him and complete a journey that had begun forty years earlier. The task before Joshua was immense: to lead God's people into the Promised Land and take possession of Canaan.

Although Moses had never crossed the Jordan into the land itself, God allowed him to see it from Mount Nebo before his death. Joshua, however, had already walked its soil as one of the twelve spies. He had seen the towering giants, the rugged hill country, and the powerful civilisations that occupied the land. Fortified cities, chariots, trained armies, and daunting obstacles stood before him. Yet Joshua also knew something far greater: God had chosen him and appointed him to lead His people into their inheritance.

That is what makes Moses' words so precious. Moses would not be there to walk beside Joshua. He could not personally guide him through the battles ahead. But he could assure him of something even better: the Lord Himself would go before him.

And Moses spoke from experience. For forty years in the wilderness, he had witnessed God's faithful leadership and unfailing presence. Through every trial, setback, and uncertainty, the Lord had never abandoned His people. So Moses passed on to Joshua not a leadership handbook, not a list of strategies, nor a collection of best practices, but a promise.

"The Lord Himself will go before you."

"He will never leave you nor forsake you."

Those two promises would be all Joshua needed. God's guidance would show the way, and God's presence would sustain him every step of the journey.

Many of us find ourselves in Joshua's position. Life can suddenly place us at the helm of responsibilities we never expected to carry. A family may lose its head. A breadwinner may no longer be able to provide. A ministry may suddenly need a leader when we feel least prepared.

In such moments, God's promise remains unchanged.

Hold on to these words. The Lord Himself will lead you. He will go before you into every unknown tomorrow. And He will never abandon you. His presence is still the strength of His people, and His faithfulness is still enough for every challenge that lies ahead.
