Psalm 55: When a Trusted Friend Turns Enemy
“Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!” ( Psa 55:1).
By Paulson Pulikottil
In twenty-three verses, the psalmist pours his heart to the Lord for help in times of trouble. He begins by entreating the Lord to hear his prayer, all that he has to say, attentively.
This psalm stands out from others in its plea for help and protection. Most of the Psalms seek protection from wicked individuals who oppose the psalmist. However, in a poignant twist, the threat in this psalm emerges from one of the psalmist’s trusted friends.
He repeatedly reminds the Lord of the potential danger from his friends. “But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng” (Psa 55:13—14). A close friend, probably a member of the same fellowship group, has turned against him.
He describes the threat the friend poses: “My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant. His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords” (Psa 55:20—21).
The friend betrayed the psalmist with deceptive words, pretending to be friendly; the foe was planning evil in his heart.
Enduring wickedness is a challenge, but the pain is profound when it comes from a trusted friend. Many of my readers may have encountered such instances in their lives, amplifying the emotional resonance of this psalm.
Despite his heartbreak, the psalmist does not end on a melancholic note. He offers upbeat counsel to those who face similar situations, showing his unwavering faith in the Lord’s ability to save. This is a beacon of hope for us all: “Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psa 55:22).
When betrayed, deceived, or treated ungratefully, we are encouraged to turn to the Lord, our best friend. The psalmist’s unwavering trust in the Lord’s guidance and support is a comforting reminder.
