Beyond Age and Experience: The Unlikely Heroes of Exodus

“Now Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh” (Exod 7:7).

By Paulson Pulikottil

Despite having reached retirement age, Moses and Aaron, with their unwavering courage, were entrusted by God to speak truth to the powers of this world.

Moses, with only forty years of experience shepherding his father-in-law’s sheep in the Sinai desert, and Aaron, whose life in Egypt was unremarkable, were unexpectedly called upon to confront Pharaoh, the ruler of the mighty Egyptian empire in the Late Bronze Age.

They told Pharaoh that the king of the universe, Yahweh, had ordered that he should release the people of Israel from slavery. Since the Pharaoh was unrelenting, a display of power ensued. Yahweh ordered Moses and Aaron to do miracles to prove that the creation was under his control and that he could use it to inflict Pharaoh’s kingdom. So, the ten plagues followed. At the last plague, Pharaoh had to let the people go.

Every Christian is not just called but empowered to speak God’s truth to the powers that govern this world. Silence is a grave sin. A Christ follower should not keep quiet when the world contradicts their creator’s will. Whether it’s a traffic jam or a corrupt civil servant, your voice can make a difference. Dial the traffic police to remove the snarl or report the corrupt officer to the vigilance department. Let God’s truth be heard.

As Christ’s followers, we must do our part in cleansing our society of sloth, corruption, and evil. God’s command is clear: “Go and tell Pharaoh’” or “speak the truth to powers.” Let us not shy away from this responsibility.
