Psalm 16:2-6: “No Good Apart from You” – Pleasant Places & Beautiful Inheritance in God’s Goodness
“The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance” (Psa 16:5—6).
By Paulson Pulikottil
Since the Lord is the ultimate source of happiness and goodness for the Psalmist, he declares, “I have no good apart from you” (Psalm 16:2). After this opening sentence, the Psalmist elaborates on the goodness of the Lord that he experiences.
The Psalmist draws two scenarios to describe his life with the Lord. First is the partying with friends and family. It was customary in ancient Israel for the host or the head of the house to send some portions of his food to the people he loved most. When Joseph was feasting with his brothers, he sent portions from his table to them. “Portions were taken to them from Joseph's table, but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry with him” (Genesis 43:34). Similarly, when Elkanah feasted with his wives, he would give Hannah a double portion to assure her that he loved her (1 Samuel 1:5).
The godly person elevates this metaphor from an ordinary party with sumptuous food and drink to a right life with the Lord. Each day is a party with the Lord and a moment of assurance that he loves and cares for us.
The second metaphor involves dividing land in the tribe or family. Lines are measuring lines used to measure out the land. The land quality, fertility, and water sources decide the destiny of a person's life on earth. Living in a barren land where nothing grows for the rest of one's life is miserable.
However, the Psalmist is more than content with all the Lord has given him. He is exhilarated to call them “pleasant places” and “beautiful inheritance.” He has no reason for complaint because the Lord is the source of his happiness, and he can find no one better than the Lord, who is already his portion.
The Word encourages us to experience the goodness of the Lord and rejoice in what he has given us: “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him” (Psa 34:8).
Just as the Psalmist experienced the Lord's overflowing goodness, we can find our ultimate joy and fulfilment in him. Imagine each day as a divine celebration filled with his love and assurance of care. The Lord has blessed us with abundant "pleasant places" and a "beautiful inheritance" surpassing earthly possessions.
