Christmas—Call to Listen to God’s Voice

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world” (Heb 1:1—2)

By Paulson Pulikottil

God of the Bible is not mute but has always been speaking. The Holy Trinity is one God in three persons communicating with each other for eternity. God commanded that everything on earth sprang into existence by his word. God has spoken to people through visions, dreams, and special appearances.

God also spoke through his messengers, some heavenly and some earthly. Angels have spoken to people like Abraham, Daniel, Mary, and John. God’s prophets like Isaiah, Micah, and so on have spoken on behalf of God.

Since the first Christmas, God has spoken to us directly through the Son of God incarnate. From his first cry in the manger in Bethlehem to his last words, “It is finished,” God has spoken to us directly in human form on the cross. He continued to talk even after the resurrection to his disciples—to Mary at the open tomb, those in Jerusalem, and on the road to Emmaus. As the hymn writer sang: “He walks with me, and talks with me, along life’s narrow way,” he speaks even now.

The first disciples wrote down what they heard from him, as John affirms: “That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us” (1 John 1:3). Scripture is the record of what the Lord has spoken so that we may have life through him. We establish a living relationship with the Lord daily as we listen to his voice through the written Word of God.

The season of Advent reminds us to listen to his voice by opening our eyes to the pages of Holy Scripture.

As you reflect on Advent, let this be your heart’s response: Open the pages of Scripture daily and listen attentively to the living Word who speaks to you personally. Invite Jesus to walk with you and talk with you throughout each day, deepening your relationship with him. Make time to hear God’s voice through prayerful reading, allowing his eternal communication to guide, comfort, and transform your life today and always.
