God’s Love Takes Human Form
“The LORD appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you” (Jer 31:3).
By Paulson Pulikottil
The Lord never gives up on us. Jeremiah reviews the history of ancient Israel, whom God chose and nourished, but they rebelled against him. Psalm 78 describes their history of rebellion against their Lord. However, the Lord was constantly after them, calling them back to him. The Lord kept sending prophets down through the centuries to remind the people that he loves them with an everlasting love that will not let them go!
The history of the people of God is a story of love. Sometimes, the Lord had to discipline them, but he would also restore them. When they leave his love, he sends his messengers to bring them back. Though he was loving, the people were never steady in their love for the Lord.
Finally, instead of talking about his love through the prophets, God came as love embodied in a baby, displayed in a manger to the world—the shepherds, the Wise Men and so on. This baby was God’s gift to the world, as John the apostle affirms: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
On the first Christmas day, God's love took human form, walking, talking, healing, feeding, and finally giving up his life on the cross for sinners who could not save themselves. He is present among us according to his promise: “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matt 28:20).
Take time this week to reflect on how the Lord has pursued you through seasons of wandering or doubt. Respond to his love by renewing your commitment to walk closely with him. Share his love in tangible ways—through forgiveness, kindness, and compassion toward someone who needs to be reminded that God never gives up. And as you prepare for Christmas, let your gratitude overflow into worship, knowing that Love himself came near and still dwells with you.
