Giving to Glorify

“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you” (Matt 6:3—4).

By Paulson Pulikottil (www.paulsonp.net)

The quantum of the donations determines the greatness of the donor and is also a sign of power. Society accords the donors' status proportionate to their generosity. People make substantial donations to gain entry to esteemed trusts, sometimes to control them.

In Jesus’ time, the rich made donations for public recognition. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward” (Matt 6:2). Maybe the people who solicited money might have blown their trumpets when they received the alms. The wealthy donors, crazy for recognition, chose public places to make donations.

But those who wish to honour God by their giving should not seek public praise. To illustrate, Jesus uses a hyperbole: “Don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” with a promise that “Your Father … will reward you.” The one who gives secretly will receive approval from God, who seeks such acts of worship.

It is not easy to make secret donations. We need receipts for the contributions to claim tax reductions. The source of online donations is traceable, and the person who received the gift may not keep the secret. Jesus' point is not about anonymity but about remaining humble. When we give, all glory should go to the Lord, and we should not withhold praise for ourselves.

Reflect on your giving—are you seeking God’s glory or human praise? This week, commit to giving humbly and secretly, letting your generosity be an act of worship to God alone. Share this message to inspire others to honour God through selfless giving.
