The Lodestar

When we accept Jesus as our saviour, we are saved from God’s wrath, but since we live in this world in the fallen flesh, we are prone to sin. Daily cleansing is the way out of this spiritual predicament.

This verse is not a call to unbelievers, as this letter was written to believers who have accepted the forgiveness of their sins by believing in Jesus as their Saviour. However, this verse highlights a predicament that believers face daily. Though God in Christ has declared that there are no more sinners in his sight, while on earth, in this fallen nature, they are vulnerable to sin.

To add to the dilemma, Christ's death for our sins and our acceptance of him is not repeatable. Sin could catch up with us any time on this side of eternity. John affirms, "If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us” (1 John 1:10). Still, believers, once saved, do not have to die in their sins.

The way out is the practice of daily spiritual cleansing, trusting in God’s faithfulness. It involves two steps: First, trust that God is faithful to restore everyone who turns to him in repentance. Second, approach him in prayer, admitting that we have done things against God's will and seeking his forgiveness.

Many Christ followers think they are doomed when they fail to do things that please the Lord or do things he disapproves of. The Word of God demands that we always be on guard against the sin to which we are vulnerable. We can confidently come to the Lord, confessing our sins, to be cleansed and restored in our relationship with him. However, this is not a license to a perpetual loop of “sin-confess-sin” or to ignore that God has called us to live holy lives.

Daily cleansing is not optional but essential for a vibrant walk with Christ. Commit today to live out renewal through confession, repentance, and trust in God’s faithful forgiveness. Set aside a few minutes each day for honest self-examination, prayer, and Scripture, asking the Spirit to reveal hidden sin and lead you into a life of holiness.
