The Lord Who Satisfies in Every Storm
“Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things” (Psa 107:8—9).
By Paulson Pulikottil
This psalm illustrates how the Lord intervened in people's lives to deliver them from their troubles. Some were in prison; others were lost in the wilderness without a home; some sailors were lost at sea, and so on. Despite their different experiences, their knowledge of God remained the same. Despite their failures, the Lord showed kindness to all of them.
The psalmist thus reveals an essential truth about the Lord from these situations. The Lord always satisfies those in need; he never overlooks those in trouble.
The Bible tells us that the Lord guided the runaway slaves through the desert as a pillar of fire by night and a cloud during the day. He fought their battles. He provided for their journey. He led Peter out of prison and appeared to encourage Paul on a ship heading for wreckage. He walked over the water and calmed the storm.
There were storms, dry and arid seasons, and life-threatening situations, but the Lord satisfied the longing souls in all these circumstances. Faith in God is the confidence that the Lord will never let his children down. This confidence is our reason for praise.
Take a moment today to reflect on how the Lord has guided and delivered you in past troubles. Write down one instance where he satisfied your need or calmed your storm. Then, share a word of encouragement or prayer with someone going through a difficult season, reminding them that the same faithful God is with them, too.
