Loving in Deed and Truth
"Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth" (1 John 3:18).
By Paulson Pulikottil
We should express our love for each other through our actions and honesty. Love is not just a feeling or a word but a way of living and relating to others; love is action, not words.
John, the apostle of Jesus, is writing to believers facing persecution and false teachings. He wants to encourage them to remain faithful to the gospel and to love one another as God has loved them. John points out that a believer who hates another is a murderer and does not have eternal life: "Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him" (1 John 3:15). He challenges them to prove their love by helping those who are in need and by obeying God's commands.
We ought to demonstrate our love by our deeds and by our truthfulness. We must follow the example of Jesus, who spoke about love and acted on it. He washed his disciples' feet, healed the sick, fed the hungry, forgave the sinners, and died on the cross for us. He also rose from the dead and gave us the hope of resurrection. He is the ultimate expression of love in action and truth.
Therefore, if we want to love one another as Christians, we must do more than talk. We must act. We must serve one another, share, support one another, pray for one another, and tell the truth to one another. We must love, as Jesus loved us in deeds and truthfulness.
