Unchanging God Keeps Us Going
"For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed" (Mal 3:6).
By Paulson Pulikottil
Human character evolves. For example, I am not the same person I was a few years ago. I have changed over the years as I learned new things and went through diverse experiences. Some of us mellow over time, some harden up, but we change. Change is the only constant in life.
But God does not change; his character remains the same. He reminds his people that, though they have been unfaithful in serving him, he has been constantly faithful to them. "If we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself" (2 Tim 2:13).
A kind and very loving man who lost his dear ones in a tragic accident turned very cruel and sadistic and found pleasure in hurting people. Although the people of God had been unfaithful to Him, God has remained a loving Father.
The Lord's unchanging nature is the secret of our existence. The Bible tells us that, although the sins of the ancient Israelites had provoked him to anger, he disciplined them; however, his love restored them when they turned back to Him. The Lord's love is steadfast. The Psalmist adored God: "For his anger is but for a moment, and his favour is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning" (Psa 30:5).
We live not by our merit but by the Lord's abundant grace despite our shortcomings.
Take a moment today to reflect on how you have changed over the years, for better or worse. Then, turn your heart toward the One who never changes. No matter how far you have strayed or how deeply you have struggled, God’s faithful, unchanging love still calls you back. Return to Him, lean on His grace, and let His steadfastness steady your changing life.
