The Lodestar

The first chapter of Genesis elaborates on how the creator brought forth the visible world in six days. Then, it goes on to say that God rested from his work on the seventh day: “So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation” (Gen 2:2—23).

The reason for observing Sabbath is God’s rest on the seventh day of creation. When Moses gave them the command to keep the Sabbath, he reminded them that it was the day even the creator of the universe took a break (Exod 20:9—11).

Taking a break from work (Sabbath) was not a suggestion but a command.

We take breaks from work to refresh and rejuvenate so we can return fully charged for the next task. Rest allows us to recharge. Just as armies call for a ceasefire to regroup and rearm before launching an offensive, companies provide travel allowances for leave or encourage employees to take vacations for the same purpose.

The concept of rest in the Bible contrasts sharply with worldly notions. In biblical terms, rest signifies a divine intervention in human affairs—those endeavours for which we typically toil. God assured his people of his unwavering provision on the sacred day of rest. During their arduous journey through the wilderness, the Lord miraculously supplied them with a double portion of manna each Friday, ensuring they had enough sustenance to last through Saturday, thereby instructing them not to venture out to gather food. Additionally, God promised to care for them during the Sabbath year, observed every seventh year, despite their ceasing to work the land. This divine promise offered them security and peace, emphasizing a profound trust in God's continual provision for their needs.

Rest is not synonymous with idleness; rather, it is an opportunity to trust in God’s abundant provisions. When we rest, we reconnect with the Lord, allowing ourselves to recharge and refresh our spirits. It is crucial to recognize that he commands us to pause and rejuvenate before we push ourselves to the brink of exhaustion. For those who find themselves caught in a whirlwind of work, it is time to reconsider your priorities. Are you a workaholic? If so, it is essential to stop the madness and tune in to what the Lord is telling you. Take short breaks during your workdays to pray and meditate. Acknowledge that your value lies not in your productivity but in your relationship with Him. The Lord is urging you to take a step back before the pressures of life lead you to a breaking point. Embrace the call to rest—you will find strength and clarity in focusing on God more than anything else. Do not wait until you are overwhelmed; prioritize your well-being and spiritual growth today. Reconnect with the source of your strength, and let rest be a vital part of your journey.

The world will go on without you, but you cannot go on without God.
