Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6).

By Paulson Pulikottil

The carnal nature is greedy; it consumes all that abounds in this world, including sin and ungodliness in all its forms. Those who are satisfied with worldly things will never thirst or hunger for the things of God.

However, those who have gotten rid of the ungodly things from their life and tasted the divine nature have an urge for divine righteousness in their life and others. The more we get carnal desires out of our system, the more would be our hunger and thirst for things of God.

Lives driven by the Holy Spirit must draw their energy from what the Holy Spirit requires. Jesus explained that he does not live by the natural food available in markets but by doing the will of God (John 4:32, 34).

The hunger and thirst mentioned here are the earnest desires for God’s rule over our lives. Righteousness is God’s inherent nature as the living God. It means that by being holy, God is just in all his dealings.

In a wicked and unrighteous world, as helpless victims and spectators, the children of God yearn to see the righteousness of God realised. No follower of Christ can be a passive witness to the violence, exploitation, deprivation, and so on that is happening around them. So, they earnestly desire for the rule of God to be established.

He promises that he will not ignore their yearning but will satisfy them. It could be a national crisis of having to live under an ungodly regime that persecutes; it could be a workplace where you are ignored or blamed or a family relationship where you are sidelined. However, those who yearn for God’s righteousness will not be disappointed.

But we need to maintain a hunger for divine righteousness and refuse to be filled with the filth of this world. Anger, frustration, and disappointments may easily give us pleasure in dealing with ungodly systems, but yearning for God’s time and his way is the hunger and thirst we must maintain.

So let us pray, "let your Kingdom come, and your will be done" in our world.
