From Sheepfold to Banquet Hall

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows” (Psa 23:5).

By Paulson Pulikottil

The man of God who wrote Psalm 23 uses two images to describe his experience of God's goodness. He begins with the picture of the sheep well cared for by the kind shepherd (23:1—4). Then, in the next verse (23:5), he describes the person the Lord treats as his guest.

Let us fill the gaps in the imagery to get a fuller picture. With enemies in hot pursuit of his life, a helpless person runs into the house of a person who receives him gladly. He provides him with food and shelter from his enemies. When the pursuers arrive, the man sits with his host, feasting at the table. Finding their victim feasting and secure, the enemies must have given up their pursuit.

The host is not just providing him with a hiding place. Setting the table in the open, in full view of the pursuers, is a brave statement that the fugitive is safe in his hands and that no one should dare touch him. Anointing his uninvited guest with oil is another statement that the helpless runaway is his guest of honour. The big party, where the cups are filled not up to the brim but until they overflow, illustrates the host’s generosity.

The psalmist declares that the host providing him with shelter, security, and sumptuous food and putting his enemies to shame is the Lord.

The Lord invites all those in distress to find shelter and comfort in him. His grace is lavish and adequate for all our needs. We only need to run towards him, not away from him.

Do not wait for peace to find you — step into the safety of God’s presence. Let his overflowing grace fill your heart. Reflect on Psalm 23 and share this hope with someone you care about.
