Creation’s Silent Sermon

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (Psa 19:1).

By Paulson Pulikottil

Many have experienced the wonder of gazing at a star-studded sky—whether through the immersive dome of a planetarium or beneath the vast heavens on a clear night. The heavens, with their silent procession of stars and planets, have long testified to God's glory and the vastness of His creation.

Long before sophisticated observatories or digital projections, people learned to read the night sky by watching stars peep through slits between dark clouds or by identifying constellations with the naked eye. The older generations passed down knowledge about distinguishing stars from planets and tracing celestial patterns, fostering curiosity and awe.

While families, churches, and religious education play essential roles in nurturing faith, the wonders of God’s creation often anchor belief, especially during seasons of doubt or questioning. The grandeur of the natural world — from the endless heavens to the depths of the seas, from towering mountains to meandering rivers — powerfully declares the glory of its Creator.

The apostle Paul affirmed this in his letter to the Romans: “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).

Whether under a pristine rural sky or a cityscape dimmed by artificial lights, contemplating God’s glory in creation remains a profound spiritual experience. It lifts hearts toward worship and reminds us of the One who crafted it all.

Today, lift your eyes to the skies or pause before the beauty of a tree, a flower, or a river. Allow the creation around you — grand or simple — to whisper of the Creator’s glory. Let it draw you into worship, reminding you that the God who spun the galaxies into being also holds your life in his hands. Make space this week to meditate on the wonders of God’s handiwork and offer him thanks for the majesty of his creation and the tender care he watches over you. And as you behold his works, let your heart echo the hymn of praise: “Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art!”
