The Power of Meekness

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5).

By Paulson Pulikottil

Meekness does not mean weakness, though they rhyme with each other. The Greek word for meekness signifies the confident disposition of powerful persons who can restrain their power and use it properly to achieve good ends. Ancient Greek philosophers explained this concept as the attitude of the lion. Though it is mighty among the animals, it does not hunt for pleasure, it does not attack anyone whom it confronts, but it has a confident gait, and its strides are firm.

To be meek is to imitate Christ’s nature. Twice in the Gospel of Mathew, Jesus is described as meek. The evangelist cites Zechariah 9:9 to describe Jesus’s triumphal entry to Jerusalem as the march of the king who is “humble (meek), and mounted on a donkey” (Matt 21:5). On another occasion, Jesus described himself as “gentle (meek) and lowly in heart” (Matt 11:29).

Jesus Christ healed the sick, raised the dead, and challenged the authorities, though he was meek. He entered the city of Jerusalem as king not violently but with meekness and humility. He was victorious over death for the same reason. Thus, he proved through his life that those who are meek are not losers but gainers. They will inherit the earth.

People who use power indiscreetly are not confident in themselves. Their fear is the seed of conflicts, violence, and disharmony. But those who imitate Christ’s meekness are confident in overcoming difficult circumstances. They know that they will not be losers but inheritors because of Christ.

Resist the temptation to assert power for its own sake and use your strength to heal, uplift, and bring peace. In a world quick to dominate, follow the way of the meek — for in God’s promise, they will inherit the earth.
