Reading the Bible with Expectation
“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law” (Psalms 119:18).
By Paulson Pulikottil
The Bible is ancient, and for many of us, it is also deeply familiar. We have read it countless times, memorised substantial portions, and marked its pages until they have become worn and dog-eared. Returning to the same book repeatedly can begin to feel routine—even dull. Especially for those of us who have grown up reading it, we may not expect to find anything new beyond what we already know.
But the Bible is not a book limited by familiarity. There are many ways to read it—and many ways for God to speak through it.
One evening, after a long day immersed in academic research on the Isaiah Scroll from Qumran—a passage I had been studying intensely for over two years as part of my dissertation—I walked into our weekly cell group. To my surprise, the passage chosen for that night’s devotion was the very same one I had been examining.
The devotion was led by a schoolteacher with no formal theological training. Yet as she spoke, she drew out truths I had completely missed. I sat there stunned. She uncovered insights that had remained hidden to me, despite my ability to read the Hebrew text in its original form. It was a humbling and refreshing moment. The Holy Spirit had opened her eyes to see treasures that my academic tools alone had not revealed.
That evening, I was reminded again that Scripture cannot be mastered like a textbook. It is inspired, and the Spirit who authored it must also illuminate it. Without the Spirit’s light, even the most learned eyes may miss its wonders.
So, before we reach for our Bibles—whether in print or on a screen—we must pause and pray. We ask God to open our eyes, not just physically but spiritually, so that we may behold the depths and beauty of his Word. When our eyes are surrendered to him, reading the Bible becomes an experience of joyful discovery.
Scripture always has more to give—more light, more truth, more wonder. But it must be read not merely with the mind, but with the heart open to the Spirit who makes all things new.
The next time you open your Bible, start with a simple prayer: "Lord, open my eyes to see the wonders of your Word." Then read slowly, expectantly. You may be surprised by what the Spirit reveals. If this reflection has encouraged you, share it with someone who needs a fresh encounter with Scripture. And if you have not already, consider starting a Bible journal—record the insights, questions, and moments of wonder that arise as you read. God still speaks—are we still listening?
