Beacons of Love Breaking into the Darkness of Hatred

“The earth, O LORD, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes!” (Psalms 119:64)

By Paulson Pulikottil

In the stillness of early morning, Laxmi (name changed) and her husband made a heart-wrenching decision. Just two days earlier, she had given birth to twins. Already struggling to care for their three children and facing financial ruin after her husband lost his job, the couple felt crushed under the weight of despair. With no one to turn to and no way to feed two more mouths, they walked out of the hospital with their newborns—and left them at the gates of a Christian orphanage.

From a distance, they watched as the infants cried, vulnerable and alone, until a small crowd gathered. Someone gently picked them up and took them inside. The couple turned and walked away, carrying not just their empty hands, but broken hearts.

The twins grew up within the walls of that orphanage, alongside other children—some abandoned, some orphaned, and others surrendered by parents too poor to provide for them. Though their lives began in abandonment, their story did not end in despair. In that home, they were embraced by caretakers who were not their kin but gave them love as if they were their own.

Despite being born into neglect and helplessness, these children encountered something transformative compassion. Through the care of others, they discovered that love does not have to come from blood; it can come from hearts willing to embrace the abandoned.

We live in a world overflowing with hatred and violence. The headlines tell of brutal crimes, abuse against the innocent, and a growing coldness in human hearts. But in this same world, there are still quiet, radiant signs of hope.

There are people and places—like that orphanage—where love resists cruelty, where kindness stands firm against indifference. These are not merely good deeds; they are expressions of God’s heart in a hurting world. The psalmist declares, “The earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord” (Psalm 33:5). We see that love in every act of care for the least, the lost, and the last.

As we reflect on this story, let it stir us to action. Philanthropic initiatives—whether orphanages, shelters, or community kitchens—are lifelines for the vulnerable. They thrive because ordinary people choose to care.

Look around your community. Find a cause. Support it. Volunteer your time, contribute financially, or simply offer encouragement.

Your kindness might be the miracle someone else is praying for.
