Facing Giants: Faith Over Fear
“Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes” (Nehemiah 4:14).
By Paulson Pulikottil
“And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, 'Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes” (Nehemiah 4:14).
The tasks before us can often seem overwhelming—so daunting that our instinct is to flee or hide. In such moments, where do we find the strength to face life’s most demanding challenges?
Motivational speakers typically urge us to boost self-confidence, summon inner courage, and confront our fears head-on. While this approach may sometimes work, many discover that sheer willpower is not always enough. Some situations are more complex, exhausting, and threatening than any amount of personal courage can handle.
Nehemiah, the leader tasked with rebuilding the broken walls of Jerusalem, faced a similar crisis. His greatest obstacle was not a lack of funds or materials—the discouragement gripped his people. Opposition loomed from the outside, and fatigue rose from within. Yet Nehemiah did not urge his team to draw strength from themselves. Instead, he directed their gaze to the God who called them and was working alongside them.
Nehemiah’s rallying cry was simple but profound: “Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome” (Nehemiah 4:14). He reminded them that God was not just watching from afar; He was the true leader of their mission—their strength, their shield, and their source of hope.
Are you facing a challenge today that feels too much to bear? Do not look inward for strength that may not be there. Instead, lift your eyes to Christ, in whom all things are possible.
Let faith, not fear, lead your next step. Trust the One who stands with you, fights for you, and empowers you. Replace self-reliance with God-reliance. Invite Christ into your struggle and walk forward with confidence—not in your strength, but in the presence of the great and awesome God.
