Open Hearts, Open Eyes: The Bible's Guide to True Love

‘And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ....’ (Philippians 1:9-11).

By Paulson Pulikottil

Jesus issues a powerful command, challenging us to love others, even our enemies: "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matt 5:44). This command is not easy, but it is a testament to the transformative power of love. At the same time, the Bible warns about things we should not love: "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him" (1 John 2:15). This juxtaposition inspires us to reflect on the nature of love and its role in our lives. Therefore, the Bible instructs us to love everyone, not everything. In contrast to the popular saying that "love is blind", the Bible teaches that while we should not discriminate in loving people, we should be discerning in the things we choose to love. According to the Bible, love is not passive but active, always keeping its eyes open. We often find ourselves drawn to things we like—food, dress, comforts, and the list may go on. But the Bible reminds us that our love for these should not be blind. We must carefully examine whether they are worth loving, whether they would enhance our walk with God, or whether they will glorify him. This alignment with God’s will is crucial for our spiritual growth and connection.
