Beyond Self-Reliance: Why Asking God for Everything Brings Joy
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matt 7:7).
By Paulson Pulikottil
Jesus promised his followers that he would give them if they asked him, without specifying the conditions or limiting the things they could ask for. The command is "ask," and the promise is "will be given."
Many people view asking as a humbling experience, putting one on a lower pedestal than the one who gives. Others do not ask because they are self-reliant, believing nothing is beyond their reach. Many things in life can indeed be achieved by human effort.
Having all that we have in life as given by God and considering all we have as God's gifts is an exhilarating spiritual experience. The value we attach to things depends on who gave them to us. We value a fifty-rupee birthday card that someone close to our heart gave us more valuable than a more expensive dress we bought. The worth of the gift is not in its value but in the giver.
That is why asking God for even mundane things, even those within our reach, is essential. He would give us all that we have.
Asking from God is an act of humility, a recognition of our dependence on his greatness and our insignificance without him. Receiving is a source of joy, as it reminds us that all we possess is a gift from the creator of the universe, "coming down from the Father of lights" (James 1:17).
It is crucial to ask God for everything, even the insignificant aspects of life, so that he can fill our lives with his abundance.
